John Stephen King

1978 - 1994 - I was moved around quite a bit with my family (myself, two brothers, and my parents). I've lived Mississippi, Louisiana, and quite a few cities in Georgia.

1994 - In the second half of my sophomore year of high school I developed a crush on a girl. It just so happens that this particular girl was in the drama program, so naturally I auditioned for the spring musical. The musical was supposed to have been Guys and Dolls, but there were not enough guys. So, it changed to Mame. I was cast as Mr. Upson. I really enjoyed my time on stage, and thought that it was something I would like to continue doing. However, I was all too aware of how many actors there already were in the world, and how hard it would be to make any kind of living out of it. No, I wanted to do something that I could make money in.

1994 - 1996 - I was pursuaded by some of my new friends in drama during the open house before my junior year that I should change my schedule and register for the drama class. Well, I relented and put joined the drama class. I was cast in four more shows before I graduated in 1996. I was also proud to be part of the first cast to win our state one-act competition in the history of the school. I really grew as an actor, and discovered that I liked being onstage more than anything else, but I was still unwilling to commit my life to it. In fact, I had registered as undeclared when I applied to college.

1996 - I went to college at Georgia Southern University. During orientation I finally decided to declare a major, and that major was Theatre.

1996 - 2000 - I was in eleven shows at GSU. I worked in the scene shop building sets, and I also served as president of Theatre & Performance, which was the student theatre organization. I was nominated three years in a row to compete for the Irene Ryan national theatre scholarship. I even made it to our region semi-finals my first year. I also finally admitted to myself that acting was the only thing I really enjoyed doing, and the only thing I was good at. So, I made the decision to become a professional actor. My acting professor, who was also my mentor, told me that the three best cities to begin would be Chicago, Seattle, and Minneapolis.

2000 - 2002 - After college I moved to Atlanta with some friends from school. I worked in a jewelry store for the summer, until I found better work at a temp agency. I had already decided to move to Chicago, but I needed some time to prepare. There were also two theatre companies I wanted to work with before I left for purely personal reasons. The first was the Gainesville Theatre Alliance. GTA is a community/educational theatre local to Gainesville, Georgia. While I was in high school, I saw shows they produced, and it became a minor goal to act with them. Also, I thought it would be a nice perform once again for the community where I began my acting career. The other company was the Atlanta Shakespeare Company performing at the Shakespeare Tavern in downtown Atlanta. This is not to be confused with the Georgia Shakespeare Festival, which has no affiliation with the Tavern. When I was a senior in high school we went to see a production of Romeo and Juliet, and I decided that I wanted to be on that stage. I got that chance in the summer of 2001 when I was cast in The Merry Wives of Windsor. It was during this show, my first professional paying show, that I was offered a role in the upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. I never dreamed that six years after seeing the show when I was in high school I would be performing in R&J on that same stage. And, Romeo and Juliet was the last show I performed in the Atlanta area. I decided in the summer of 2002 that it was finally time to make the move to Chicago.

2002 - 2006 - I arrived in Chicago with about a month and half worth of rent money, and very little else. Unfortunately, I underestimated how long it would take for me to get a day job. I scraped by for three months before landing a job at a finance company downtown. It was only after this that I could then start auditioning. My first show was a production of Antigone with a brand new company. Since then I've been auditioning as much as I can. I was cast in a show at WNEP Theater, and found that I really liked the company and on January 26, 2004 I was voted in as an Artistic Associate. And, on October 1, 2005 I was asked to become a company member of Corn Productions. With my goals in mind, I changed jobs in the spring of 2004. In the spring of 2006 my tenure with WNEP came to an end in any official capacity. I remained friends with everyone in the company, but I was no longer an artistic associate. Late in 2006 I was laid off from my day job. I decided it was time to return to Atlanta.

2007 - Present - I am currently living and working in and around Atlanta. I decided to audition for the apprentice company at the Shakespeare Tavern, and was accepted. It was the best way to reacquaint myself with the company. So far, I have also been working with the Button Theatre, a new and developing theatre company in the Atlanta Suburbs.
